Kia has officially begun production of its 2025 EV9 all-electric SUV at the company's West Point assembly plant in Georgia. This milestone marks the first time an electric vehicle has rolled off the assembly line in the state, signifying a major step forward in Georgia's journey toward becoming a hub for e-mobility innovation.
The ceremonial start of EV9 production was commemorated with a celebratory event attended by Kia executives, including SeungKyu (Sean) Yoon, President and CEO of Kia North America and Kia America, as well as Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and James Watson, Vice President of Production at Kia Georgia. Governor Kemp highlighted the collaborative efforts between the state and Kia, praising the expansion as "just the latest example of what comes from state and local partners working with this valued job creator."
This momentous occasion is the culmination of a massive $200 million investment by Kia, which has created approximately 200 new jobs at the West Point facility. Notably, the plant's assembly line has been expertly retooled to accommodate both electric and traditional vehicles, showcasing Kia's commitment to a flexible, forward-thinking manufacturing approach.
Yoon emphasized Kia's strategic commitment to the U.S. market through its Plan S strategy, stating, "Today's launch of the Kia EV9 in Georgia is the latest example of Kia's commitment to the U.S. market and the state of Georgia." With accolades like World Car of the Year, World EV of the Year, and North American Utility Vehicle of the Year under its belt, Kia has demonstrated its ability to produce award-winning, world-renowned vehicles – a feat the Kia Georgia team is poised to continue with the EV9.
Stuart Countess, President and CEO of Kia Georgia, reflected on the plant's journey from assembling its first vehicle in 2009 to now producing Kia's flagship electric offering. He praised the dedicated team members for their unwavering commitment to quality and their ability to turn challenges into opportunities, paving the way for this remarkable achievement.
For the Canadian market, the Kia EV9's assembly in Georgia represents an important step towards greater access to electric vehicles. As consumer demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to grow, Kia's investment in EV production reinforces its reputation for innovation and positions the brand as a frontrunner in the burgeoning e-mobility sector.
